Apartment Hunting – Part 1

The journey begins – we are officially in the window where we are looking for a 2 bedroom apartment! When people ask us why we’re springing for a 2 bedroom, we have a set answer of “more space, guest room/office, 2 parking spaces.” In private, we really do want all those things, but even more, we want a room for a baby in the future. Apartment living is our life right now, and we are looking for a place we love to start our family and stay put for a few years!

Financially… this is an interesting move on our part. In the city we live in, a lot of properties are rent controlled, which means that each year, your rent can be increased by a maximum of 3%. Prices have been skyrocketing recently (they’re now higher than my dad’s mortgage…) so we’re decided to bite the bullet on upfront costs and get situated in a place we can “grow into” rather than doing another year in a one bedroom.

Here’s a breakdown of what we’re looking for –

Must Haves:

  • 2 bedrooms, 1 bath
  • Closet space
  • Some form of air conditioning
  • 1 Parking space
  • Allows cats

Honestly I don’t think that’s asking a lot, but you’d be surprised! Just the simple requirement of having pets allowed has already taken a few places out of the running, which is really too bad. (How much damage can a cat even really do?!)

Would Be Greats:

  • 1.5 or 2 baths
  • 2nd Parking space
  • Not on the ground floor
  • Central air
  • Walking to grocery store or pharmacy

These are the things that would make it our dream apartment. A second bath, or at least a half bath for guests would be a huge perk in the long term. I’m also not a fan of living on the first floor of a complex, it makes me feel less secure.

Bonus Awesome Things:

  • Non-carpet flooring
  • Working elevator
  • Small building (20 units or less)
  • Walking to bars or restaurants
  • Plentiful nearby street parking for friends
  • Split level/Townhouse layout
  • Close to my commute to work
  • Fridge & basic appliances (microwave, dishwasher)
  • New shower

I like things the way I like them! These things would make our dream apartment absolutely magical. The bar is quite high in the place we are now (with roommates). At this point I’m basically describing  a house, I get that, but there are apartments that are THIS great – it’s just a matter of finding them in our budget, so… here we go!

Anything I missed? What must haves did you look for in your apartment, especially with a baby? Any and all advice is well received!
